Catholic

The Catholic Church has deep roots in Sabah, with parishes, mission schools and the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kota Kinabalu. Mass is celebrated daily in most parishes, with several Masses on Sunday in English, Malay, Mandarin and Kadazan.

Visiting

  • Only Catholics receive Communion; others may stay seated or come forward for a blessing with arms crossed.
  • Keep your phone silent. You are welcome to sit quietly in the church whenever it is open.

Questions People Ask

When are Masses held?
Times differ by parish; most have a Saturday evening Mass and several on Sunday morning. Check the parish's page here or its notice board.
Can I go to confession?
Yes. Parishes list confession times, often before the Saturday Mass.
How is the Catholic Church different from other churches?
Catholics are in communion with the Pope and centre their worship on the Mass and the Eucharist. Other churches differ in worship, structure and some beliefs while sharing faith in Christ.
